Hate List

Setting: The setting of the book the “Hate list” is set in Garvin High school, an American school with your typical American teenagers.

Analysing characters: The main character in the “Hate List” is Valerie leftman. Valerie is the type of girl that keeps things to herself and is very independent. She is a very dark 16 years old, and going through a hard time at school with the so-called “in” crowd. It is very difficult for Valerie to go to school and get bullied everyday then go home to hear her parents arguing. But the way Valerie avoids the bullies and her parents, is her boyfriend, Nick Levil. He is the most important person in her life. He understands her and goes through the same situations as she does.

Construction of the story: The most important part at the begging of the book is when the reporter announces the scene of the shootings that occurred in the Garvin High school cafeteria. It starts of in the past tense with flash backs from the action, and it gradually progresses into the present tense. If you just briefly read the first chapter, you will have a good idea of what the story is about because in the first chapter, it describes a lot about the action that happened in the school cafeteria. The person who was telling the story was Valerie, but sometimes, others would as well.

Relationships:
The most important relationship in this novel would be the relationship between Valerie leftman and Nick Levil. Nick was one of the new kids a school and Valerie wanted to get to know him more, because he looked like he had all the same interests as Valerie had. She slowly started speaking to Nick more and before you know it, they were best buddies. They both had a huge amount of things in common and they both connected very well. They understood each others pain because they both experienced the same problems. Valerie began to fall for Nick. He was all she had ever thought about. Know one understood Valerie besides Nick, and she loved that. Over the time He grew the same feelings for her and asked her out. Everything was perfect between the two of them until Nick started taking drugs. He was acting really different and weird. He hadn’t been spending much time with Valerie but Valerie knew why, but she was to afraid to speak up. But she never thought that Nick would do such a horrible thing, but the drugs took over his life.

Issues: The book really made me think about bullying and how it could lead to something as big as this. Know body really knows how other people feel inside, or how others react to things. Its hard growing up with bulling. I have experienced it, and im sure a lot of people have, but, Valerie had to put up with it every single day.

Personal response: I personally enjoyed this book a lot because it isn’t like a fiction fairy tale; it’s a real story, with real problems and situation that happen in teenager’s lives. I recommend this to teenagers aged 13+ but I honestly think 16 year olds would enjoy it more because it really helps you in some situations where you are not sure what to do or how to react. i would not recommend this book for kids under 13, because it is a little intense and i don't think they will understand it as much as a 16 year old would. You might be disturbed about the shootings and when Valerie describes the blood everywhere, which in my eyes is gross but she explains it very well. At the start of the book, it was a little hard to understand, because the storyteller kept on changing and I got confused, but then I got the hang of it and realised what the author was trying to do.
